On a northern river you spend hours in the water and in the boat. Comfortable waders and the right boots decide whether the day is a pleasure or a fight with cold, wet feet.
Breathable or neoprene
| Type | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Breathable (membrane) | No sweating when walking or in the boat, light, dry quickly | Not warm on their own, need warm layers underneath |
| Neoprene | Warm in cold water | Hot when walking or in sun, heavy, slow to dry |
A summer expedition mixes walking along banks with long hours in the boat, so breathable waders with good layers are usually more versatile.
Stockingfoot or bootfoot
Stockingfoot waders with separate boots support your ankles better on rocks and are easier to walk in. Bootfoot waders are quicker to put on but are weaker on slippery rocks and long walks.
- Buy boots one size up: there is a neoprene stocking and a thick sock inside
- Rubber soles with good tread suit both rocks and the boat
- Studs grip slippery rocks but can scratch a boat floor: ask the organiser
What to wear underneath
Cold legs in waders usually come from cotton: it soaks up moisture and does not dry. Wear wool or synthetic base layers, fleece trousers on top, and a thin synthetic sock under a thick wool one. On a hot day one thin layer is enough.
Getting the fit right
Try waders on over the layers you will actually fish in. Check that you can squat, lift a knee high and step over a boat side. Stockings that are too long rub; too short and the crotch pulls.
Care in camp
In the evening turn waders inside out and hang them upside down in the drying tent; set boots apart and remove the insoles. Bring a small repair kit with membrane glue and patches. Fix a small puncture the same evening.

FAQ
Can I use hip boots instead?
For the boat and shallow riffles yes, but on deeper water and when landing on banks waders are much more comfortable and safer.
Do I need a wading belt?
Yes. A belt keeps water from filling the waders quickly if you fall. It is a simple and important safety measure.
